Dave Douglas

Biography

Fromwikipedia

Dave Douglas (born March 24, 1963) is an American jazz trumpeter and composer whose music derives from jazz, classical music, folk music, electronica and klezmer. Since 1993, Douglas has recorded more than forty albums as a bandleader. He has produced more than fifty, including all albums released by his independent label, Greenleaf Music. He has also performed and recorded with dozens of musicians in jazz and popular genres and has been a member of the SFJAZZ Collective and various John Zorn ensembles. With his own groups, Douglas has pioneered new settings for the trumpet in jazz. In more recent years, he has explored collaborations involving modern dance, spoken word/poetry, and film. Douglas served as the artistic director of the Banff Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music from 2002 to 2012. He is a co-founder of the Festival of New Trumpet Music – a non-profit charity that supports new and pioneering trumpet work across genres, genders and communities – that is held annually in New York City.

As a regular Downbeat reader, I annually cast my votes in various categories. One of the most challenging, among many, is trumpet player of the year. This past twelve months or so proved to be particularly difficult. Following prolonged consideration I came down to this list - which included the honourable Mr Douglas:
Avishai Cohen (not to be confused with that outstanding bassist having the same name); Jeremy Pelt; Tomasz Stanko and Enrico Rava. How to select just one? When doing so I consider - among other things - recent releases, influence and originality. It's still very tough. (Of course like many long-term jazz fanatics, I honour the heroes of my youth. However, that no longer suffices.) This year, after much contemplation, I finally settled on Avishai Cohen. Yet the remainder were all a close second!
All that said, Dave Douglas is a true wonder.
Christopher Lynch.
