Biography
Not to be confused with the baritone saxophonist Leo Parker. Leon Parker (born August 21, 1965 in White Plains, New York) is a jazz percussionist and composer. He studied drums from age 11 and had classical training in his teens. He went on to study jazz under the tutelage of Barry Harris. His recording debut would be with Harvie S, His first wife Lisa is a flautist and he had worked with her musically. He often plays "pared down" drum kits, sometimes consisting of only one cymbal. His highest charting album might be 1998's Awakening, for Columbia Records, which made it to 20th at Billboard (magazine)'s "Top Jazz albums."

Possibly my favourite modern drummer/percussionist. (I own several of his albums alongside those of Jackie Terrasson.)
I admire the way LP explores myriad musical influences and the meaningful manner in which he can employ the most simple percussion instrument with such beauty and impact. The driving, heavy sound he achieves on his pared down drumkit - snare, bass and ride cymbal only - is frankly astonishing. A fine recommendation.
