The National Endowment for the Arts bestowed upon her its "highest honor in jazz", the NEA Jazz Masters Award, in 1989. In fact, the story that biographer Renee relates seems to be a bit more complex. Vaughan was frequently accompanied by a friend, Doris Robinson, on her trips into New York City. Sometime in the fall of 1942 (when Sarah was 18 years old), Vaughan suggested that Robinson enter the Apollo Theater Amateur Night contest. Vaughan played piano accompaniment for Robinson, who won second prize....

Call me a big softie, but this is a secret all time fav song ever since I saw Julie Andrews' Maria trill it out in THAT movie, back when.
Sarah gives it a smoky, sexy, grown-up feel, so I can re-live the childhood goosebumps of hearing this track with late-night friends, and not lose 'cool' points.

A truly magnificent singer - a lady who can still show many trendy younger singers 'how it's done'. Superb voice, nice range and control, lovely intonation, soulful and capable of crossing genres comfortably.
