The 2017 Wangaratta Festival of Jazz program is here, with a host of top Aussies and internationals heading to the rural Victorian town.

In 2017, the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz has welcomed a host of new artistic directors to shape the program for the annual jazz and blues gathering. With the 2017 program now here, take a look at who's coming to Wang...

This year, there are a mix of international and Australian artists, special projects and first-time collaborations: US trumpeter Christian Scott is making his first visit to Australia as part of the festival, as is Finland's Kari Ikonen Trio.

Other overseas acts making the trip down under to Wangaratta include New Orleans maestro Jon Cleary and New York-based vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and dancer Jen Shyu (pictured). Several Aussie expats are on the bill too - like pianist Aron Ottignon, now signed to Blue Note, and trumpeter Nadje Noordhuis. And Spiderbait’s Kram will team up with Paul Grabowsky and James Morrison in one of the most unlikely combos imaginable.

Local names hitting the many stages around Wang include Barney McAll's 'ASIO' outfit, saxophonist Angela Davis' new group, sets from bassists Sam Anning, Nick Hawyood and Jonathan Zwartz with their respective bands, singer Gian Slater and her trio plus 2016 National Jazz Award winner Mike Rivett and his Digital Seed project. Adding to that, there will be a new festival hub with a free stage, and pop-up concerts in a local church as part of the festival, which runs from the 3rd to the 5th of November.

As always, the National Jazz Awards will also be held during Wangaratta, with heats taking place across the weekend and the finals on the Sunday night. The focus this year is on brass instruments, and entries for the awards close at the end of this month - so be sure to visit the Wangaratta Jazz page to find out more about the application process. And new for 2017, ABC Jazz will be recording and live streaming to Facebook all the National Jazz Awards semi-finals across Saturday and Sunday in the leadup to the final 3 performances, which - as per tradition - will be hosted by Jazztrack's Mal Stanley and broadcast live on ABC Jazz.

Congratulations to all involved for producing such a wonderfully varied line-up of outstanding bands and musicians.
Obviously a tremendous amount of work and thought has gone into this - and of course there are always the complexities of logistics to handle. Well done everybody!
I'm particularly interested in Jen Shyu and the Kari Ikonen Trio.
