Tal Cohen Freedmans 2015

Congratulations to Tal Cohen, who has been awarded the Freedman Fellowship in jazz for 2015 at the Sydney Opera House

Pianist Tal Cohen has won the 2015 Freedman Jazz Fellowship. More to follow on our social media...

The annual Freedman Jazz Fellowship, held by The Music Trust is designed to assist young jazz musicians already on the journey to building their career.  Based on an invite-only process, nominees aged 35 and under are selected by senior industry figures in each state. Those nominated compile a project proposal, and from this four finalists are selected to perform at The Studio, Sydney Opera House on July 20. The judges for 2015 are distinguished Australian musicians - bassist Zoe Hauptmann, saxophonist David Theak and pianist Chris Cody.

ABC Jazz will be covering the event with photos, interviews and videos as well as recording the night for later broadcast.  ABC Jazz is also proud to announce that the 2015 Freedman Jazz Fellow will be offered three days studio time in the ABC Sydney recording studios. This, in addition to the $15,000 fellowship.

I believe the judges missed a great opportunity for the support of the future of music last Monday night. Tal Cohen's quartet certainly played in a very polished and professional manner but at the same time presented very conventional jazz in a format going back to the 50's. Cohen's plan to spend the prize money making an album with American musicians has also been done so many times.
On the other hand Peter Farrar and the Prophets were not nearly so polished but offered such a wonderful glimpse of what the music of the future might be. Peter's plan to use the prize money to continue his work with the Prophets on a more regular basis can only leave us wondering about the music we will now miss out on. What a disappointment.

Hi Orit, great news for Tal...!

We'll be gathering lots of content from this event on July 20. We'll be recording for later broadcast and grabbing some video, photos and interviews also.

So it's not so much as watching it live, but staying tuned for all the coverage around that time, in the days following etc. We'll have info on this webpage, on the ABC Jazz social media accounts (like Facebook and Twitter), and I'm sure Tal will send you some links also.

Thanks for the interest, and good luck to the Cohens at the Freedmans!
