Tomasz Stanko at Sydney Festival
The New Yorker has described Poland’s Tomasz Stanko as ‘one of the world’s most original and innovative jazz trumpet players.’
Forming his first ensemble at the tender age of 20 (in 1962), Tomasz Stanko has had an impressive worldwide career exploring ambient, free form improvised jazz. In 2004 he was honored by the President of Poland with an Order of Polonia Restituta, ranked second amongst Polish civilian decorations.
His latest release is the 2009 work Dark Eyes, which features a new ensemble, who will be touring with Stanko on this visit to Australia. Known for his mentoring of young musicians, the quintet features some great new talent from the Scandinavian jazz scene: pianist Alexi Tuomarila and drummer Olavi Louhivuori from Finland, and bassist Anders Christensen and guitarist Jakob Bro from Denmark.
The Tomasz Stanko Quintet will be playing in Sydney as part of the 2011 Sydney Festival on January 28 at the City Recital Hall and they will also be in Melbourne on January 29 at the Melbourne Recital Centre.

In the past Henk van Leeuwen has managed to bring some of these touring Polish artists to Canberra. It was fantastic seeing the Marcin Wasilewski Trio here earlier this year. Pity we can't get to see this quintet.
As a big ECM fan and lover of nothern European jazz generally, I'm delighted to know this intriguing, uniquely original musician is returning to our shores. However, I would be further thrilled to listen to him live at an intimate jazz venue like Bennett's Lane, rather than a large concert hall. What are my chances one day?
Why isn't he coming to bundaberg?
We're looking forward to it..!
Good news indeed!
