The Festival's founding artistic director, Adrian Jackson says the 2009 program promises another feast of memorable music from Australian and international artists. "Perhaps the best-known in jazz circles is the New York trumpeter Charles Tolliver (pictured), who has worked with everyone from Max Roach to Andrew Hill, as well as leading his own bands. He will present his big-band arrangements with the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra, and will lead a Quartet with pianist Mike Nock."
Other NY-based artists who will be at the festival include: jazz singer Kendra Shank, drummer Ari Hoenig, pianist Barney McAll, guitarist Nir Felder and bassist Linda Oh, who moved from Perth to New York in 2003.
European musicians will include the likes of pianists Carsten Daerr, Laia Genc, Martin Litton, guitarist-singer ‘Spats' Langham, and saxophonist Froy Aagre.
Among the Australian jazz artists at this year's festival will be pianist Paul Grabowsky, trumpeter Scott Tinkler, the Australian Art Orchestra, the Band Of Five Names, saxophonist Julien Wilson, guitarist Steve Magnusson, drummer Allan Browne, saxophonist Andrew Robson, singer Kristin Berardi and pianist Mike Nock.
The Festival's Blues Marquee always hosts the year's biggest line-up of blues talent seen in Victoria, and this year, the festival will present three great international acts: US guitarist-singer Deborah Coleman, British blues/soul singer and guitarist James Hunter, and Texan singer and guitarist Hamilton Loomis.
The festival's main program includes a schedule of over 80 events at 16 venues, but also hosts the annual National Jazz Awards finals, which will this year feature competitors on the saxophone. Previous saxophonists to win the award include Tim Hopkins, Julien Wilson, Elliott Dalgleish and Roger Mannis.
In addition to a great line-up of jazz and blues performances, the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz offers visitors the chance to enjoy the quality wines and gourmet foods for which the surrounding region is renowned, whether at street stalls in town over the weekend, or meals at selected venues.
It all adds up to Wangaratta Jazz 2009 being an event that no music lover can afford to miss!
