Bobby Hutcherson was considered to be one of the greatest jazz vibraphonists and marimba players of all time, alongside names like Milt Jackson and Gary Burton. He made his recording debut in 1960 with Les McCann, before going on to work extensively with Blue Note Records as a leader and a sideman. He appeared on classics including Eric Dolphy's masterpiece Out To Lunch (1964), Jackie McLean's One Step Beyond (1963), and McCoy Tyner's Time For Tyner (1967). He also lead his own sessions on the iconic label, recording memorable albums such as Dialogue (1965), and Stick-Up! (1968).

Hutcherson returned home to the West Coast in the late 60s, and went on to work with Harold Land, as well as a budding list of youngsters including Chick Corea and Stanley Cowell. The 80s and 90s saw Hutcherson continue to produce a strong line-up of records on Landmark, Atlantic and Verve, and in the early 2000s, he became an inaugural member of the SFJAZZ Collective.
