ABC Jazz Special - Sketches of Spain
The follow up album to Miles Davis' 1959 best-seller Kind of Blue, Sketches of Spain saw the third great collaboration between the trumpet of Davis and the compositions/arrangements of Gil Evans, after their previous partnership on Miles Ahead (1957) and Porgy and Bess (1958).
This album has been heralded as one of the greatest of all time, with Gil's atmospheric orchestrations and Miles' haunting trumpet sound delivering some of the most distinctive sounds in jazz history.

All the good things said about "Sketches Of Spain" are true!
I first got wind of it in 1967 or 1968 - not sure which - when former ABC jazz presenter, the wonderful Arch McKirdy, interviewed bluesman John Mayall. (I was crazy about Mayall back then and still admire him.) Arch asked JM what jazz he liked and he replied enthusiastically "I love the music of Gil Evans". Arch followed this up by playing "Saeta" and his young chap was besotted. I went out and purchased the album which I still have on vinyl.
Hi Adam - sounded like a great gig in Adelaide!
Superb. One of my favourite late 20th century recordings. Thanks for this intimate experience.
I saw Ray Vega do a version of this with students from Elder Conservatorium a couple of years ago - they did a sterling job of fleshing out the unusual patterns and textures.
Thanks again Lindsay,
Unfortunately the package can't be offered as a download as it is largely a commercial music release.
And the interview clips are also available commercially, in the Ben Sidran package, listed above.
Good luck tracking it down..!
Thanks Lindsay,
The program will be available for a period of month after the broadcast date.
Glad you liked it, and thanks for the comments.
