Originally from the coast near the NSW city of Newcastle, Mears has lived in Europe since 1992, establishing himself as one of the most formidable jazz musicians on the continent.
He is well known amongst European audiences who appreciate his rhythmic and harmonic flare on the trombone and his virtuosic ability on the didgeridoo.
Mears is also a professor at the Music Academy in Basel, Switzerland, which provides a good base for touring and recording.
In this interview, Mears caught up with James Kennedy to discuss the European Jazz scene and listen to some music.
