The competition was staged by the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra and held at this year's Wangaratta Festival of Jazz.
Three finalists were selected to perform their competitions at the awards on Friday October 30, 2009; Jacam Manricks (QLD/NY), Joseph O'Connor (QLD) and Andrew Murray (VIC).
The compositions were performed by the Mothership Orchestra and judged by panellists Dave Panichi, Mike Nock and Evan Lohning.
Andrew Murray took out the award and prize money of $3,500 for his composition 'The Real Mission'. Murray is a composer and valve trombonist who studied composition, theory and arrangement in Graz, Austria with Ed Partyka, Ed Neumeister and Bob Brookmeyer.
Murray's composition 'The Real Mission' also won first prize in the Swedish Big Band Composition 'Jazzverk'.

Andrew Murray, May 9, 1828(1828-05-09) – January 18, 1917 (aged 88), was a South African writer, teacher, and Christian pastor. Murray considered missions to be "the chief end of the church."
