New music from Polish trumpet icon Tomasz Stanko, recorded in the US with his acclaimed New York Quartet.

Featured this week is Tomasz Stanko's December Avenue - a new recording out on ECM Records alongside the trumpet player's New York Quartet. Joining Stanko is David Virelles on piano, Reuben Rogers on bass and Gerald Cleaver on drums - with the band all contributing original tunes.

Artist Biography


Tomasz Stańko (born July 11, 1942) is a Polish trumpeter, composer and improviser. Often recording for ECM Records, Stańko is strongly associated with free jazz and the avant-garde. Coming to prominence in the early 1960s alongside pianist Adam Makowicz in the Jazz Darings, Stańko later collaborated with pianist Krzysztof Komeda, notably on Komeda's pivotal 1966 album Astigmatic. From what I've so far heard, this album is a stunner.
I'll be listening out for more.
For what it's worth - thanks again Stephen Stills! - ECM is rightly renowned for its sublime music in addition to those artistic, tastefully photographic album covers; this one is another genteel masterpiece.
Sublime art all round in an increasingly shallow and materialistic world.
All is not lost.
