Billie Holiday comp
Dec 1, 2010 Updated Dec 22, 2010

If you would like a bit of smooth jazz to play at your next intimate evening, then we can help you…

The Fly Me To The Moon compilation features jazz legends such as Sarah Vaughan, Nina Simone , Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong, as well as contemporary artists including The Idea Of North, Melody Gardot, Michelle Nicolle and Grace Knight.

ABC Jazz has 5 copies of this double CD to give away.  All you need to tell us is what song gets you flying to the moon, and why.

This competition has closed.

The winners are:

Margaret Morgan - NSW Lush Life, by Billy Strayhorn. No only is it full of the most exquisite progressions and chromaticism, the lyrics are extraordinary. So jaded and full of ennui, yet written by one so young, they demonstrate an empathy of great depth. And the imagery is beautiful. It flies me to the moon, even when I'm feeling utterly earthbound.

Ken Howard - NSW Milestones by Miles Davis.... Because  my wife and I used  it as we walked down the aisle at our wedding many years ago. Whenever we hear it , it still reminds us of that special occasion in our lives.

Cameron Baird - VIC Resolution, by John Coltrane but lyrics and vocal by Kurt Elling. It takes me instantly back to a gig at Ormond Hall when my wife and I were in the balcony seats and there were so few of us there we were able to steal down to the very front. It was wonderful being that close. We could see every move Laurence Hobgood made on the piano.

Sarah Ryan - WA Summertime. My introduction to jazz, on my father's scratched Nina Simone record. I'll never forget that feeling, that the voice is an instrument with unlimited potential to take you away...

Hugh Worrall - NSW Sex, by The Necks. I think the way in which the Necks create beautiful lines of music and then move them slowly to a new place is mesmerizing. I think they can move your consciousness to a different place. And it really can be pretty sexy too.

We hope you enjoy the CD.
