ABC reporter Michael Brissendon takes a look at the club which has helped define the direction of Jazz, with comments and a performance by Ravi Coltrane.
The Village Vanguard is located in Greenwich Village, New York City and has been running since February 22 1935. Among many historic performances, the club has played host to over 200 recordings from the likes of Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins and Keith Jarrett.
The club continues to feature today's most influential jazz stars as well as a regular Monday Big Band night with The Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, which has been running since 1966 when it was established by Thad Jones and Mel Lewis.

Artist Biography
Ravi Coltrane (b. August 6, 1965 in Long Island, New York) is an American post-bop jazz saxophonist. Co-owner of the record label RKM Music, he has produced artists such as pianist Luis Perdomo, guitarist David Gilmore, and trumpeter Ralph Alessi.
