In January 2016, the iconic Sydney Festival turns 40, and as always, there are some note-worthy jazz gigs taking place around the city.

In 2016, Sydney will welcome jazz drummer Antonio Sanchez, who has also been making a name for himself as a film score composer after his groundbreaking soundtrack of solo drumming for the film Birdman. Sanchez will be performing the Birdman drum score to a live screening of the film at the State Theatre on January 16.

The Australian pianist and composer Stu Hunter (pictured) has been busy recording his third album - The Migration. Hunter is set to premier the work with a 10-piece band at the City Recital Hall in Angel Place on January 9.

Also taking place at the City Recital Hall is another Australian premier - Aurther Russell's 'Instrumentals' - originally performed in the 1970s. Remarkably, this restaging of the original concert features the same core band – which includes long-term collaborators Peter Gordon (organ) and Ernie Brooks (bass).

I've always wanted to become a musician, and if I had, the drums would have been my chosen instrument! Pity though, I became a removalist in Sydney instead! Haha!

Love Antonio Sanchez. Saw him with Pat Metheny - a fantastic drummer!
