Jazztrack - Since 1976

Jazztrack 40th Cover
Oct 25, 2016 Updated Dec 2, 2016

We're celebrating Jazztrack's 40th B'Day - highlights from a new 3CD set of Aussie jazz, recorded by the ABC.

This year Jazztrack turns 40, and to celebrate, Mal Stanley has dug deep into the ABC audio archives to put together a 3 CD collection of material that we've recorded over the last 4 decades.

Mal notes that "ever since Jim McLeod began Jazztrack back in 1976, documenting the growth of jazz in this country has been a central element of the program. The growth and maturity of the music has happily coincided with the program's existence, and it's been such a rewarding experience to be able to both record and present the many musicians both young and old who have been the essential part of it."

The new 3-disc features music from Bernie McGann, Mike Nock, Stephen Magnusson and Kristen Berardi - to name a few! The full set will be available on ABC Music this November to conincide with AusMusic Month here on ABC Jazz. It's also our feature album this week.

Amongst others, how great to see Adelaide's Ted Nettlebeck included -if my memory is correct I first saw him play at Adelaide downstairs jazz venue "The Cellar" of the mid sixties; a very young Roger Frampton burst onto the scene from The Cellar as well. But Shelley Scown,??? I can readily think of other female singers I'd prefer to see in this collection!

Hearty congratulations to all - past and present - who have been or remain involved in bringing this wonderful jazz programme to air.
Jazztrack has given so many of us memorable hours of glorious sounds for which we should all be grateful, in addition to keeping us up to date with jazz news. I vividly recall those early editions of the show with the legendary Jim McLeod at the helm. Thanks so much everybody. I'll get my hands on that CD pack ASAP too.

'Lover Man' from Tony and Graeme is enough for me to buy the collection. It's been a long time coming, even allowing for the later recording, which, to me, hasn't got the vibrancy or spontaneity of the original. Thanks Mal.
