Sun Ra Arkestra
Mar 10, 2011 Updated Apr 18, 2011

Jazz Up Late is giving you the opportunity to win tickets to the Sun Ra Arkestra at the 2011 Melbourne International Jazz Festival.

In Australia for the very first time, the Sun Ra Arkestra is performing in Melbourne on Sunday June 5 at The Forum.

Formed in the mid-1950’s, The Arkestra continues to explore cosmic sounds across the musical galaxy, keeping the spirit of their late leader, Sun Ra, alive.  Under the direction of Marshall Allen, the Arkestra still boasts many members of the original ensemble.

If you would like to be in the running to win one of five double passes to a performance unlike any you’ve ever seen before, courtesy of Jazz Up Late with Gerry Koster, we want to know: If you were a member of The Arkestra, what instrument would you play - and which extra-terrestrial body would you like Sun Ra to collect you from on the way to a gig?

The most creative answers will win the tickets.

Please note that the prize is tickets to the show only, you must be able to make it to the venue.

The winning entries are:

Robinson:

I would eschew physical instrumentation altogether,  instead channeling the cosmos through my sacred Saturnal headdress which just happens to be hooked up to Ra's old Minimoog. To get to the gig, I would hitch a ride with Sun Ra from our mutual residence on Saturn.

Simon:

Solar-sail wind horn. Titan; where I will be dining on asteroid aphids with Sun Ra.

Rajiv:

I would play the Aeolian Wind Harp of course! While mistakenly attributed to the ancient Greeks (circa 6 BC), the Aeolian Wind Harp is actually native to the planet Jazz Masalus, my home planet. I accidentally left it in Greece while on my annual inter-planetary holiday.  (Luckily for me, I had inter-planetary travel insurance.) The wind harp is quite a clever piece of our early work that involved harnessing the power of the wind to create sonic wave patterns capable of elevating the listener to new heights of transcendental bliss. I was chatting with Sun Ra the other day (he has actually retired on our planet) and he thought that this would be a perfect addition to his Arkestra. I've linked my Earth email account to my inter-planetary communication system, so you should have no problems getting in touch with me.

James:

I'd play the Ukrainian Bandura, and be collected from one of the Loka worlds that Buddhists believe in.

Aviva:

I'd play Theremin with the Arkestra, using a lot of portamento. This would make it a breeze for Sun Ra to collect me from Pluto. If he told me I had a heavenly body, I'd hold it against him.

I can't imagine what we'll be hearing from The Arkestra, but we can be certain of one thing - there won't be a dull moment!
