'The First Quartet' John Abercrombie

2010 MIJF 7
Apr 28, 2016 Updated May 13, 2016

A historical feature this week, following an ECM reissue of three albums by John Abercrombie's first quartet.

Catch highlights from not one but three John Abercrombie albums this week on ABC Jazz. Arcade, Abercrombie Quartet and M have been remastered from the original tapes and released as a box set - for the first time on CD.

Abercrombie's so-called 'first quartet' featured Richie Beirach on piano, George Mraz on double bass and Peter Donald on drums, performing all-original compositions contributed by the four. The albums were recorded between 1978 and 1980, and showcase Abercrombie’s development as an artist, melding post-bop with both fusion and free forms.
