I have just finished the first of what will be many hearings of this outstanding CD. Shamefully, I'd never heard of Barry Tuckwell before reading about this CD on the Jazz website. He is truly a remarkable artist, playing a very difficult instrument with extraordinary skill and feeling. The French horn is not sympathetic to jazz nuances, but Barry makes it a marriage made in heaven. He is of course supported by a very sympathetic quartet in Tony Gould's piano, Graeme Lyall's saxophone (and arrangements) Ben Robertson on bass, and David Jones on drums. The strings of the Tasmanian Symphony add a lush support to a collection of outstanding standards, My next hearing will be accompanied by good wine, lamb shanks and warm thoughts. Highly recommended.
