Jazz Up Late with Gerry Koster
Live: Jazz Up Late Fridays 10:30pm
Repeated: Mondays at 9pm
"Music is an adventure, for both its creators and its listeners. I'd like to think of 'Jazz Up Late' as a musical adventure - and like any adventure, it might range from the sublime to the hair-raising. I'll be exploring contemporary jazz at home and from around the world as well as looking at emerging trends and how the music of other cultures and genres are currently influencing jazz." - Gerry Koster
You can now hear ABC Classic FM's Jazz Up Late on digital radio, right here at ABC Jazz.
Jazz Up Late will still be heard on ABC Classic FM's analogue signal at the usual time, while ABC Classic FM's digital service will offer new classical music programs during that time-slot.
This Week:
Friday March 12
Two concert recordings from prominent musicians on their respective instruments – pianist Giorgio Gaslini and trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith – are among this week’s highlights.
In 2002 Giorgio Gaslini was a featured artist at the Parma Frontiere Jazz Festival in northern Italy and you’ll hear a typically inventive solo piano medley from him, combining his own works with music by Keith Jarrett and Roger Ramirez.
Wadada Leo Smith was on the bill at New York’s 13th annual Vision Festival in 2008 with his Golden Quintet and you’ll be hearing a selection from his new CD Spiritual Dimensions, which features music recorded at the festival with keyboardist Vijay Iyer, bassist John Lindberg and the drummers Pheeroan AkLaff and Don Moye.
You’ll also hear from pianist Angelica Sanchez, the Dave Holland Big Band, Sydney’s Kim Lawson Trio, pianist Matthew Shipp and his trio, Barney McAll’s album Mother Of Dreams And Secrets – and from the archives, a 1979 recording from drummer Paul Motian called Le Voyage, with double-bassist Jean-Francois Jenny-Clark and the all too rarely heard saxophonist Charles Brackeen.
Last Week:
Friday March 5
Japanese pianist Satoko Fujii is back with another new CD this week – this time with her band Gato Libre which features her exclusively on the accordion. Also on the agenda: new discs from the Kim Lawson Trio from Sydney with their debut CD Alive And Kicking, and from America, another trio – Trio This with their debut, That – led by drummer George Schuller, it features double-bassist Matt Pavolka and our own Barney McAll at the piano.
From Germany, pianist Joachim Kuhn interprets the music of Ornette Coleman and from Canada is a group that is almost impossible to categorize – Fond Of Tigers, a Vancouver-based septet of violin, trumpet, guitar, bass, piano and two drum kits.
You’ll also hear from the latest disc from the American group Floriculture, headed up by pianist Carl Maguire, the trio of Charles Lloyd, Zakir Hussain and drummer Eric Harland – soon to perform in Australia – and The Dilworths recorded in the studios of ABC Jazz.
And, with a healthy respect for the days of jazz-yore, we go back to December 23, 1965 and visit Chicago’s Plugged Nickel club where Miles Davis and his second “classic quintet” with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams was recorded in concert. And, on the free side, recorded the following year in New York for the adventurous ESP label: alto saxophonist Charles Tyler and his ensemble.
