2009 National Jazz Award Finalists Announced

The 10 finalists for the 2009 National Jazz Awards have been announced, featuring performers from around Australia, New York and Shanghai.

The National Jazz Awards are staged annually at the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz, with the 2009 event featuring entrants on the saxophone.

Judging the awards this year are Sydney pianist Mike Nock, Melbourne saxophonist Julien Wilson and Perth saxophonist Jamie Oehlers.  The 10 finalists will perform at Wangaratta with highly regarded pianist Sam Keevers, bassist Phil Stack (winner of the 2008 National Jazz Awards) and drummer Ben Vanderwal.  

From the 10 finalists, 3 performers will be selected to play in the final round, which will be broadcast on 'Jazztrack with Mal Stanley', live on ABC Jazz and ABC Classic FM, from 5.00-7.00pm on Sunday November 1.

The ten finalists are:

•     James Annesley, 29, from Melbourne

•     Nick Bowd, 30, from Sydney

•     Jon Crompton, 23, from Melbourne

•     Zac Hurren, 31, from Brisbane

•     David Jackson, 25, from Sydney

•     Jacam Manricks, 33, currently living in New York (pictured)

•     Willow Neilson, 31, currently living in Shanghai

•     Phil Noy, 32, from Melbourne

•     James Sandon, 33, from Perth

•     Tim Wilson, 34, from Melbourne

(Ages shown are as at the 1st November 2009)

The winner will receive $6000 plus a studio recording session for 'Jazztrack’ and an invitation to perform in the Stonnington Jazz festival in May 2010.  The runner-up will receive $3000.  The third finalist will receive a prize of $1500.

Past winners include some of Australia's Jazz elite, including such names as Barney McAll, James Muller, Steve Magnusson, Julien Wilson, Phil Slater, Scott Tinkler and Michelle Nicolle.
