2011 Freedman Jazz finalists

This year's Freedman Jazz Fellowship finals will be held at the Sydney Opera House on July 8. See a late change to the finalists here...

The annual scholarship has announced this year's finalists, who will compete for a prize of $15,000 cash and ongoing support from the Music Council of Australia.

UPDATE: July 5, 2011

Due to a family bereavement, Sydney drummer Evan Mannell has pulled out of the 2011 Freedman Jazz Fellowship. Evan will receive an automatic nomination for the 2012 fellowship and will now be replaced by a fifth finalist, John Parker.

2011 Finalists

Ben Vanderwal: drums (WA)
Matt Keegan: saxophone (NSW)
Tom O'Halloran: piano (WA)
John Parker :drums (QLD)

Evan Mannell: drums (NSW)

All finalists will perform publically with their own bands at the Sydney Opera House Studio on July 8, 2011.  The fellowship will be adjudicated live at the event by musicians Mark Isaacs, Toby Hall and Stu Hunter.

Tom O'Halloran (born 9 March 1892, date of death unknown) was an Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the VFL. Williamstown recruit Tom O'Halloran was primarily a ruckman but was used in various other positions. He was a centre half-forward in South Melbourne's 1918 premiership side and a three time Victorian interstate representative.

What a fabulous night of jazz we were treated to at the Sydney Opera House Studio. Matt Keegan's composition and performance were extraordinary - so deserving of the Freedman Fellowship.
