Australian Real Book?

Bernie McGann
Nov 20, 2009 Updated Dec 14, 2009

Melbourne musician Tim Nikolsky is surveying jazz musicians around the country in the hope of compiling a resource of Australian Jazz compositions.

Nikolsky's inspiration comes from the Real Book, an underground compilation of song transcriptions of Jazz
Standards.  Well known amongst jazz musos worldwide, the original Real Book was assembled in the 1970s by a group of jazz students attending the Berkley College of Music in Boston, US.

By providing a survey for Australian musicians, Nikolsky hopes to compile an Australian version of the popular Real Book that is a relevant resource for professional musicians and students, including compositions from the likes of Dale Barlow, Bernie McGann (pictured) and Barney McAll.
