Congratulations Tim Willis
The commission is an annual initiative, supported by the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, and is designed to encourage jazz composers at a pivotal point in their career.
Willis has been awarded $10,000 to create a large-scale new work, to be broadcast on Melbourne community radio station PBS FM and premiered at the 2013 Melbourne International Jazz Festival.
"I'm honored and elated to be chosen as the recipient of the next year’s Young Elder of Jazz Commission; I'm looking forward to making the most of this opportunity and will endeavor to produce an outstanding final work. It will mean that I can write new and challenging music and explore new ideas and concepts. I'd like to thank PBS, the Melbourne International Jazz Festival and Mark Newman of K2 Asset Management, for giving me this opportunity" said Tim Willis.
Willis' band 'The End' (pictured) have previously been featured on ABC Jazz in programs from Jessica Nicholas and Ivan Lloyd's Jazz Notes.
Artist Biography
The End were a British rock band formed in 1965 by Dave Brown (bass, vocals) and Colin Griffin following the demise of The Innocents. Nick Graham (keyboards, vocals) and John Horton (saxophone) joined from Dickie Pride's backing group, The Original Topics, and Roger Groom (drums) of The Tuxedos completed the line-up.
