Aug 22, 2013 Updated Jun 25, 2014

Marian McPartland, jazz pianist and host of NPR's 'Piano Jazz' interview series has died in New York at the age of 95.

British born Margaret Marian Turner moved to the US in the 1940s after marrying Chicago cornettist Jimmy McPartland.  The pair settled in New York in the late 1940s with Marian finding regular work at the famous Hickory House on 52nd Street.  She worked at the club throughout the 1950s, meeting practically every working jazz musician in the heart of New York's jazz culture.

McPartland began her radio career in 1964 hosting a series of interviews with notable jazz musicians.  The concept gained traction to the point that Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz began broadcasting on National Public Radio in June, 1978.

Piano Jazz gained notoriety as the longest-running cultural program on NPR, with McPartland interviewing and performing with the guest musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie, Mary Lou Williams, Oscar Peterson, Chick Corea, Hank Jones and Bill Evans... to name a few.  She continued to host the show until 2011.

McPartland died on August 20, 2013 at her home in Long Island, NY aged 95.
