John Dankworth dies
The musician passed away in a London hospital on February 6.
Dankworth, a jazz saxophonist/clarinettist, worked as musical director for stars such as Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson and Nat King Cole and fronted a number of his own bands, including The Dankworth Generation Band and The Dankworth Seven. He also composed several popular television themes including The Avengers and Tomorrow's World.
After hearing about his knighthood in 2006, Dankworth told the BBC: "I've played jazz for 65 years, with the great jazz men. For some reason I've been in the right place at the right time."
Dankworth's wife, British singer Cleo Laine, announced her husband's death before the finale of an anniversary concert at The Stables, a theatre in Buckinghamshire that the couple founded together.
