Melbourne Jazz Fest: artists announced
Michael Tortoni (Artistic Director) and Sophie Brous (Program Director) revealed the details of this year’s line-up at the Festival launch last night.
The festival will be held from May 1-8 and will feature a program of international stars including Charles Lloyd, Ahmad Jamal, John Abercrombie, Mark Feldman, Drew Gress, Joey Baron, Lionel Louke, Mulatu Astatke, John Hollenbeck and Avishai Cohen.
But the locals also get a gig or two, with performances from The Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra, Mike Nock, Paul Grabowsky, Stu Hunter, Dick and Christa Hughes and Scott Tinkler.
The festival includes a series of free performances at venues such as Federation Square, The State Library of Victoria, The National Gallery of Victoria and Southern Cross Station. There is also an extensive set of masterclasses from the greats, including Charles Lloyd, Joey Baron/Mark Feldman, John Abercrombie, John Hollenbeck and Lionel Loueke.

Charles Lloyd (born March 15, 1938) is an American jazz musician. Though he primarily plays tenor saxophone and flute, he has also occasionally recorded on alto saxophone and more exotic reed instruments which include the Hungarian tárogató.
