National Jazz Award Finalists Announced
Entrants have been selected from Australia, USA, Japan and France by a blindfold panel of pianist Mike Nock, trombonist James Greening and trumpeter Phil Slater.
Chair of the judges, Mike Nock commented: "There were a lot of really impressive entries... it was incredibly difficult to cut the field back to just 10 finalists. I'm sure the ones who made it through will put in some really impressive performances at Wangaratta."
The competition’s 10 finalists will perform at Wangaratta in the first round on October 30 and 31, with 3 performers then selected to play in the final round, broadcast live on Jazztrack with Mal Stanley, from 5.00-7.00pm on October 31. Soloists will perform with the rhythm section of pianist Sam Keevers, bassist Rodrigo Aravena and drummer Ben Vanderwal.
The 10 finalists are
Simon Ferenci, 27, from Sydney
Nick Garbett, 27, from Sydney
Matthew Jodrell, 30, from Perth, currently based in New York
James Kennedy*, 30, from Sydney
Eamon McNelis, 27, from Melbourne
Damien Maughan, 34, from Melbourne
Nadje Noordhuis (pictured), 33, from Melbourne/Sydney, currently based in New York
Nicholas Pietsch, 22, from Adelaide
Don Stewart, 30, from Melbourne
Pat Thiele, 27, from Melbourne
(Ages shown are as at the 1st November 2010)
The winner will receive $8000, plus a studio recording session for Jazztrack with Mal Stanley, as well as an invitation to perform at the Stonnington Jazz festival in May 2011.
The runner-up will receive $5000.
The third-placed finalist will receive $2000.

For the award winner I'd like to offer a special invitation to perform at the first Sydney International Jazz Festival (SIJF), which will take place in August 2011.
