One of the most colourful characters in the Australian Jazz landscape, pianist and composer Serge Ermoll has passed away.

Arriving in Australia from China as a Russian immigrant in 1951, Serge Ermoll developed a 50 year career here in Australia and also overseas.

As a pianist and composer, Ermoll collaborated with such international artists as Phil Woods, Art Pepper, Joe Henderson, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown, Sonny Stitt, Jimmy Whitherspoon, Ernestine Anderson, Dizzie Gillespie, David Leibman, Odeon Pope, The Art Ensemble Of Chicago, John Scofield, George Cables, Branford Marsalis and many more.

In the 1970s, Ermoll formed the group Free Kata, which became known as one of the most progressive jazz groups in Australian history.

Sorry to hear the passing of Serge Ermoll. He was a great player and quite a character. My condolences to Helene and His Family.
