Trumpet player Matthew Nicholls took out the 2016 James Morrison Scholarship at Generations in Jazz last year - and as part of the prize, he's recently recorded an album with us here at ABC Jazz. During his time in the studio with his septet, the Mount Gambier-based Nicholls also had a chat with us about one of the first Aussie albums he really got into.
The record is from vocalist Liam Budge's self-titled debut - an appropriate selection, seeing as both Liam and Matthew cut their teeth in Canberra. Budge (now based in the US) was also the winner for the vocal scholarship during at Generations in Jazz in 2012. Furthermore, Nicholls' current teacher Mat Jodrell is on the album.
On top of that, we'll also take a sneak peek at some of the music that Matthew has recorded in the studio recently.
