Traveller's Tale

2014 Wangaratta Jazz 70 Jeff Tain Watts
Page added Feb 9, 2017 Updated Feb 20, 2017

We turn our attention to a new recording from Aussie ex-pat Troy Roberts, who's now making a name for himself over in the United States.

Troy Roberts gets around. He recently came second in the 2016 National Jazz Awards at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival (video below). He was also heard on a recent feature album, alongside organist Joey DeFrancesco. On top of that, the saxophonist has just dropped his own recording, titled Tales & Tones. It features the drumming prowess of Jeff 'Tain' Watts, as well as Silvano Monasterios on piano and Robert Hurst on the bass. The recording is made up of a healthy amount of new originals, as well as some tricky arrangements of standards and an old favourite from the Aussie vibraphonist and composer John Sangster.

On this episode, we also pay tribute to guitarist Steve McKenna. The Sydney stalwart passed away in February 2017, and we'll hear from one of the recordings he tracked at the ABC back in the 2000s with Bernie McGann on sax.
