Jazz Up Late:

The Spirit in Jazz

Lance Ferguson
Page added Feb 4, 2013 Updated Feb 13, 2013

Owen McKern presents this episode of Jazz Up Late, with new and old releases that focus on spirituality in jazz. Check it out here.

Featured in the program will be a new project for guitarist Lance Ferguson.  Mostly known for his work in Hammond trio ‘Cookin’ on 3 Burners’ or as bandleader with soul/funk band ‘The Bamboos’, Ferguson in late 2012 released an album under the name ‘Menagerie’.  The album is called They Shall Inherit and it clearly references many of Lance Ferguson’s influences from an era when jazz artists such as Pharaoh Sanders, Alice and John Coltrane, Sun Ra and others were exploring questions of spirituality in their own music and in the sounds around them.

We’ll hear from Menagerie, Alice Coltrane, Pharaoh Sanders, Miles Davis and other pieces that draw from the sacred, the spiritual and the unknown.

Also in the program will be a few new releases from late last 2012 that might have slipped past you – from Jan Garbarek to Australian group 'Motion', plus a couple of fine ECM discs from Manu Katché and the duo 'Food'.
