Blakey's band

Art Blakey
Page added Dec 22, 2014

Drumming legend Art Blakey and his first quintet are featured on this episode, with one of Blue Note’s first ever live recordings from 1954.

Art Blakey's At Birdland series was one of Blue Note Record's first live recordings, caputred at the iconic club. This was also Blakey's debut as a leader in his own right, and the band was a precursor to the first Jazz Messengers group, with Clifford Brown on trumpet, Lou Donaldson on alto, Horace Silver on piano and Curley Russell on bass. We're also featuring the full set on Thursday Night Live in January, 2015.

Another live feature is Miles Davis from the Blackhawk in San Francisco in 1961 with saxophonist Hank, and we'll also hear a radio broadcast from New York’s Town Hall in 1943 featuring Eddie Condon and his band.

Sticking with the live theme, we'll hear a Jazztrack recording of Peter Knight's 'Way Out West' from the 2013 Wangaratta Jazz Festival.

Mal also shares some favourites with a wrap up of 2014.
