On a recent OS flight in the small hours of the morning, I heard Billie performing "I'm A Fool To Want You", and was again reminded of her extraordinary soulfulness. Her take on this classic is near heart-breaking and remains a reflection on the deep sadness which at the time of that recording, was set to overwhelm her. I pray sweet Billie is now somewhere beautiful and has found the love, inner peace and respect that was so lacking in her earthly life.
(By the way, this was one of the few memorable tracks to be heard on that aircraft jazz channel. As I've previously observed, the jazz programming on airlines is generally insipid. Glen Miller for instance! Spare me.)

There's never been a more soulful female jazz singer. Yes, 'Happy Birthday' indeed Lady Day.
Thankyou too Mal Stanley for the thoughtful feature on Billie in last Saturday's edition of Jazztrack.
By the way people, do have a serious listen to Duke Ellington's 'Far East Suite', as mentioned. This astonishing album is too rarely heard from and just look at the all-star line-up performing on it!
Happy listening all,
Christopher Lynch.
