We've heard of concept albums, but how about a concept band!? Three Swiss musicians - pianist Lukas Gernet, drummer Samuel Buttiker and bassist Rafael Jerjen (who grew up in Canberra) have come together under the guise of MaxMantis - bringing their own aliases to the table in an effort to fuse jazz with the likes of super heroes. Their music tells the story of three heros who mix with so-called villans and allies. We caught the act at the 2017 Melbourne International Jazz Festival - and we'll hear some of that recording on this episode.

There's also a new release from James Muller with the Sydney Con Jazz Orchestra, plus an up-and-coming record by guitarist UK Rob Luft.
