Captured and broadcast from the 2016 Wangaratta Jazz Festival: a tribute to the late Bernie McGann, feat.Sandy Evans and Andrew Robson.

A collection of Bernie McGann's alumni joined forces at the 2016 Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues to pay tribute to the late Aussie saxophonist, and ABC Jazz broadcast the set live.

A giant of the alto sax, it's been just over three years since Bernie passed away, aged 76. During his long career, McGann was acknowledged as one of the leading voices of Australian jazz, with his signature, earthy tone remeniscent of the Australian bush that he loved to practice in. For this tribute, friends and past collaborators come together. They include Warwick Alder (trumpet), Sandy Evans (tenor sax), Andrew Robson (alto sax), Brendan Clarke (bass) and Andrew Dickeson (drums).

Along with McGann's music, Sandy showcased her suite, dedicated to Bernie. She based this work on a phrase from one of Bernie's practice notebooks: "Long, Loose, Taste, Groove."

Also, to whet your appetite, be sure to catch highlights from our recording of Bernie at SIMA in 2012, right here.
