We pay tribute to the late alto saxophonist and composer Arthur Blythe - who passed away in March 2017 at the age of 77.

Arthur Blythe is heard on this episode from his 1980 album Illusions. The saxophonist passed on March 27, 2017 - leaving behind a legacy that includes over two-dozen original recordings, as well as countless others as a sideman. He worked alongside greats including Jack DeJohnette, Gil Evans, McCoy Tyner and the World Saxophone Quartet.

Also on the show: new recordings from Emma Stephenson and Gian Slater, as well as more from an up-and-coming release out of Finland with Verneri Pohjola’s tribute to his late father Pekka Pohjola.

Arthur Blythe (born July 5, 1940, in Los Angeles) is an American jazz alto saxophonist and composer. His stylistic voice has a distinct vibrato and he plays within the post-bop subgenre of jazz.
