Jazztrack:

Vanguard revisited

Bill Evans
Page added Aug 13, 2015 Updated Aug 20, 2015

Mal's spinning some classic live tracks made at the iconic Village Vanguard in New York, including Coltrane, Bill Evans and Chucho Valdez.

The Village Vanguard turned 80 earlier in 2015, and in recognising the role the club has played in both New York and the wider jazz community, Mal's playing a number of live recordings made there over the years. We'll hear from John Coltrane's famous 1961 stint at the club, as well as from pianist Bill Evans, who cut one of jazz's most important trio albums one stage at the Vanguard.

Speaking of live tracks, we'll also hear more from Joe Lovano's set at Bennetts Lane, where he was joined by Australians Paul Grabowsky (piano), Phil Rex (bass) and Dave Beck (drums). Plus there's new music from the Danish guitarist Jakob Bro and his record Gefion.

Hi, I am a regular listening to the program whenever it is poss. I wonder if you ever cover improvised music and Free Jazz from Germany. I live close to the Ruhr Valley a hot spot of new music, improvised music and Free Jazz. There are groups like Deep Schrott and The Dorf you might have heard of. Festivals not only at Moers but at Essen cover such music and the State of NRW sponsors a program called Soudntrips. Some of the more know German Jazz musician are performing in various locations and cities in NRW like Münster and the cuba Black Box. Alexander von Schlippenbach and his trio is amongst those still performing.

Anyway keep going with your program as it is as well because this offers me the gateway to jazz from Down Under e. g. released by Jazzhead. I recently reviewed their release of Enrico Rava and the Monash SESSION.

Greetings and have a nice day ferdinand dupuis-panther, jazz'halo
