Half a century after the release of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Django Bates has put together a song-by-song homage in an ambitious project featuring the Frankfurt Radio Big Band. We'll dip into it on this week's program, along with new releases by US trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire and Sydney sax player Jeremy Rose. And we'll hear from drummers Jim Black and Ari Hoenig, both currently in Australia for performances around the country.

Regarding the innovative Django Bates, do have a listen/view to his outstanding take on John Lennon's poignant "Strawberry Fields Forever". The the lamina of the orchestration is intoxicating to the ear. As a guy who played classical flute for a few years, I was particularly thrilled to hear that cluster of flautists producing such sublime backing to the vocals. Enthusiastically recommended.
