US vocalist Giacomo Gates hits his stride on a new CD called What Time Is It?, featuring his quintet of Jerry Weldon on tenor saxophone, John Di Martino on piano, Tony Lombardozzi on guitar, Lonnie Plaxico on bass plus drummer Vincent Ector. Gates' career blossomed late: he worked as a laborer all over the US and particularly in Alaska operating heavy machinery. Singing was a pastime until Sarah Vaughan heard him in Fairbanks, Alaska. She encouraged him to pursue a career in music - which he did. Gates has since released eight albums as a leader.
