Trombone tribute

Reggie Watkins 16by9
Page added Feb 16, 2017 Updated Feb 23, 2017

A recent recording from trombonist Reggie Watkins, who has acquired Jimmy Knepper's very own horn - and pays tribute to the Mingus mainstay.

Playlist Information

A playlist and listen-again audio are available for 1 month by clicking the play button above after the broadcast.

Jimmy Knepper was the trombone player in many of Charles Mingus' bands in the 50s and 60s and also work with many other greats - including Gil Evans, Thad Jones, Mel Lewis and Stan Kenton. Sadly, he passed away in 2003 from Parkinson's disease.

On a new release, another trombonist - Reggie Watkins - pays tribute to Knepper, using Knepper's very own horn. Watkins had the privilege to perform for Knepper just before his death, and this release is a homage to the late great. The album's aptly titled Avid Admirer, and it kicks off this playlist of new music from Mal Stanley and Jessica Nicholas.
