On first listen, the band Steely Dan may sound more "rock" than "jazz," in the traditional sense. However, the creative duo of Donald Fagen and Walter Becker - the band's two masterminds - profess a deep love for improvised music.

On this episode, Marian McPartland sits down with the pair, as well as drummer Keith Carlock and Jay Leonhart on bass. Hear some of their favourite jazz standards performed live, as well as a number of their own compositions from albums like Aja and Katy Lied.

Love Steely Dan! So relevant in today's Mammon worshiping, bleak world.
Those throw-you-off-balance chord changes, dangly solos, hip-sneer angst loaded lyrics, all combine to beguile lovesick outsiders to dream-enter those quieter backstreets of Brooklyn and Manhattan against a backdrop of misty morns and lonesome sunsets.
Fagan and Becker are to New York what Lennon and McCartney are to Liverpool.
Listen to 'Aja'. Feel the moods. Gaze. Wonder. Sip. Ponder.
Christopher Lynch.
